An overactive mind can be dangerous. When you are dealing with people you must be in control of your mind. When your mind is over active and racing uncontrollably you tend to open mouth and insert foot. This will leave you, many hours later, wishing you would to have reacted differently.

Since we have all been the position where we have reflected upon a situation and regrettably said or done something we wish we would not have, or wish we would to have said more than we did, or perhaps even worded something differently, we can all relate to this subject. However, controlling your mouth is not the problem, but rather, controlling your mind is.

When you recognize that your mind is out of control the first thing you do is relax and take deep breaths. It is not necessary to continue to converse when you feel as if you must sling out anything that comes to your mouth. What is your rush anyways? You can better relax by taking control of the conversation. This is done best by telling your audience "Let us all just take a moment to think about this clearly". Many times over, this will silence the circumstance and your audience will follow suit.

Another technique that I can share is most useful when you have notice that you will be put in a situation or conversation, such as with a meeting at a school, at work, or a family talk. Under these circumstances, I adamantly urge you to grab a notebook. Outline the topics for discussion, questions that you have, and points that you would like to make. Leave room for notes in the margins. In addition, offer others to put pen to paper.

This technique will also allow you to appear and be organized, cover all topics, and maintain a controlled environment for all. Mastering the art of calming your over active mind will ultimately take care of the problem of controlling your mouth. When your thoughts are controlled you speak controlled. When you are controlled you are also very well poised and more confident.
