Only rarely would a trip to the doctor be necessary for this condition. If you're a first time mother, ask an experienced relative or neighbor first.

3. Infant formula. Buy a store-brand for a 50% savings - up to $600 a year. All U.S. infant formula is mandated by the FDA to have the same nutrient density.

4. Vaccines. Government-run health facilities can purchase vaccines from the manufacturers for about 30% less than private doctors can. Go to your local health department to save at least $100 on baby shots the first year.

How to Relax and Focus Your Mind in Minutes

Attention deficit disorder has almost become an epidemic in our information overloaded society. Unlike the brain, your mind has no boundaries and can be "scattered all over the place". There are many ways to relax and focus your mind. All intense exercise or mental games like chess or billiards will help focus your mind. However, most people don't have the time to jog for 5 miles or shoot a game of pool when they most need to focus.

To be successful it is important to understand that your mind is not your brain. Your brain is the physical apparatus that tunes in and expresses your mind. Your brain can identify a joke, but your mind has a sense of humor. Your brain is similar to a television set it is a receiver of the airwaves that carry information. Your mind is the airwaves (information) of your consciousness.

Your mind is pure consciousness. It is a non tangible energy which includes your thoughts, feelings, imagination, creativity, memories, hopes and dreams. Your brain is a receiver that helps organize, plan and express your minds information. Knowing how to relax and focus the energy of your mind can help you make trustworthy decisions and live a more productive and peaceful life.
Here are simple and easy methods to help relax and focus your mind in minutes. Pick and choose any one of the following techniques to do alone or if you are really scattered then do all five in the sequence I've listed below.

Breathe.

Take a short pause from your daily activity. Begin by inhaling a deep breath through your nose and as you exhale slowly through your mouth. On your exhale, mentally say the word "relax". Repeat 3-4 times. Next focus your awareness on what has captured your attention. What are you thinking / worrying about? Is your mind in the past or the future? Are you thinking about someone in particular? Explore what has captured your attention and then repeat the breathing exercise above to release it with your breath.

Write.

This exercise will help you gain clarity and perspective. Find some notebook paper to write down your thoughts. This will help you slow down your thinking and release what's "on your mind". As you write, remind yourself... "I have these thoughts... I am not my thoughts; I have feelings... I am not my feelings." Let the words flow out of you without editing or being concerned with grammar or spelling.

To clear your consciousness express in writing what's on your mind. Then take these papers and destroy them. This is why I suggest notebook paper versus a journal. Tear them up... throw them away... flush then down the toilet or burn them. You want to destroy the writing with gusto and intensity. Mentally tell yourself, "I am letting go of these thoughts and feelings. I am freeing my mind."

An important fact, you can not write as fast as you think, so when you write down your thoughts you will slow down your thinking automatically. This is one of the benefits of journalling.

Hum.

Take a few moments and hum the lyrics of a favorite song. Concentrate on remembering the lyrics and feeling the vibration of humming in your chest and throat. This will benefit you in two ways: 1. Concentration and remembering will focus your mind. 2. The vibration of humming will ground you into the sensation of your physical body. It is great and you can do this anywhere. After a few minutes you'll feel a difference.

Visualize.

Close your eyes. Take in 3 deep breaths and relax. Imagine a "basketball size" sphere of golden white light hovering above your head. Use your imagination to see it, feel the warmth radiating down on the top of your head. Next imagine this sphere is slowly lowering, touching the crown of your head. Take another deep breath and bring the sphere down inside your head and imagine it is absorbing all the scattered thoughts and dissolving them. Focus on the light and sense it filling your mind with peace and comfort. After a few minutes open your eyes and go back to your activities. To experience a relaxed focused state of mind, learn how to meditate.

Be Sensual.

Focus your attention on your five senses. This provides a mental boundary to contain your scattered mind. Being sensual simply means to be aware of your five senses. Smell the air, feel the temperature on your skin, listen to the sounds around you and to taste the food that you eat. Being sensual brings you into the present moment fast and effectively, and you'll soon become more focused and productive. With the power of your mind can make trustworthy decisions and experience greater mental control and inner peace.

Mothers tend to unconsciously step into a super hero role, caring for family members and pushing their own needs aside. Here are a few simple and quick ways for mothers to relax at home:

1. Light a candle. Lavender, vanilla, sandalwood and spearmint are soothing scents to look for when purchasing special candles. The simple act of lighting a candle creates a soothing environment for you to relax in.

2. Deep breathe. Inhale deeply through your nostrils then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat several times until you begin to feel calm. Using this simple deep breathing technique can be helpful when you're stuck in traffic with loud kids in the back seat.

3. Five minutes of quiet time. Retreat to a room alone and close the door behind you. Sit comfortably in a chair, on a bed, or cross-legged on the floor and practice deep-breathing. Simply taking five minutes to retreat to your own space can provide a calming effect. You will begin to feel your body relax almost immediately.

4. Play relaxing music. There are many different kinds of CDs available today with soothing music and sounds. Try a couple of different ones, playing one during the day and one at night to relax you just before bedtime.

5. Read a book. Escape into a different world with a good book. The fictional world can be a great way to escape from the pressures of motherhood for half an hour or so.

6. Paint with watercolors. Painting is a great way to relax. Watercolors are especially recommended because there is no "right" way to use them. Allow your mind to relax as you move the brush over the paper and paint away your stress. Think and paint like a child, by letting the colors flow and mix together.

7. Go for a 10-minute walk. Nature is extremely relaxing. Put on your walking shoes and enjoy the scenery. Keep your chin up as you walk and remember to breathe deep and take in the scenery around you. Breathe deeply as you walk. By the time you return home, you should feel much better.

8. Keep a daily journal. Journaling has long been a way for people to "dump" their problems. It doesn't have to be anything fancy. Just grab a notebook and start writing. Taking ten or fifteen minutes at the end of the day to write out your thoughts can be helpful in releasing stress you'd ordinarily keep pent up inside.

9. Use your imagination. Close your eyes and think about some place or thing that makes you feel calm. Hold that picture in your mind as you practice deep breathing. You might also try using imagery to relax while your scented candles burn and soothing music plays in the background.

Making the Most of Singles Events

So, you are single and you are thinking that attending a few singles events might liven up your social life a little. Maybe you are looking for "Mr. Right," or maybe just "Mr. Right Now." Whatever the case a fun singles event like speed dating or a dinner party might be just what the doctor ordered.

Structured Is Often Better

Have you been to a singles event where there really was not structure? Say you are 30-something and you go to this event that is wide open as far as age range. There may be a few folks there who are in your age range, but how can you pick them out? It is better to have a targeted age range and work on a smaller scale than it is to wade through people who are too young or too old for your taste. Mingle

At a speed dating event you will likely have a pad so you can make notes as you meet people. That is a good practice when you are at a singles event like a dinner party, especially if you are going to be exposed to a lot of people.

So what muse am I talking about?

I'm talking about that goddess called inspiration, imagination and creativity, whose absence leaves many a talented writer gnashing his teeth and rending his garments. For me, my teeth remain ungnashed and my garments unrent, because I've never suffered from a lack of ideas for my work. Does this mean I've learned to 'seduce the muse' or merely that I've learned techniques to stimulate my creativity?

The answer is, both, because in the end run they mean exactly the same. Inspiration comes from the unconscious workings of the mind which we, by definition, can have no control over. However, there are a few tricks you can employ to stimulate the brain into making the neural connections that encourage great ideas.

I recall one of the earliest writing training textbooks I read, which encouraged the novice to carry about a notebook and jot down ideas, fragments of conversation and events, to eventually be blended and transformed into a fascinating novel. It seemed like a silly idea at the time and I never picked up the habit because in my head is the greatest tool for recording information known to man. And as this is the device that will be doing the blending, I think it best to get the information in there as rapidly as possible.

The brain performs this creative process at two points, as it enters and especially as it leaves dream (REM) sleep, when we enter the realm that self-hypnotists and those practising meditation try to reach. Everybody does it naturally, but few are aware of it. It is the time when the brain performs miracles, taking all its memories and creating something new from them. For most these fleeting images rapidly dilute to nothingness as we get into the business of the waking world, the brushing of teeth and the making of toast. But the writer must know that these fragmentary visions are worth their weight in gold. This is the place for the notebook, on the bedside table, not in your hip pocket. Write down these random imaginings because they're as creative as you're going to get.

So, how do we encourage this process or seduce the muse? There is nothing particularly clever about it, one must live one's life as normal, experiencing as much as is possible. Eating, drinking, talking, reading, watching, listening, traveling, making love, getting drunk, climbing, diving, skiing, fishing, flying, swimming, you get the idea, you have to live life to feed your brain. As an old editor of mine used to say, 'it's all grist to the mill'.

I've played about with self-hypnosis and it does help me to relax and reach a creative plateau, but whether it's entirely necessary I'm not too sure. It's quite easy to do, just sit comfortably, close your eyes, breathe regularly and count down as you become more and more relaxed. It takes practice but eventually you will reach a point where you're not really awake or asleep. Magic happens there.

You must remain aware of the process and prepared to note down what you have created, much material is lost in this transition between states, but what remains can be outstanding.

So, seducing the muse is easy. If only women were.

Keeping a Dream Journal

An effective way to keep a journal or diary is in a dream
journal. This type of journaling is used to record and
track your dreams after you are awake.

Upon waking, even before you get out of bed, take time
to be silent and recall your dreams. Then, reach for your
dream journal on your nightstand. This journal can be a
blank book or a notebook. Plus, you can keep your pen
and a small light or flashlight on your nightstand, too.
You can also use a tape recorder to record your dreams.

Date each entry with the date, day of the week, and time
you are writing down your dreams. Start writing your dreams
in the present tense, as if what you dreamt is happening right
now. Whether you wake in the morning, the middle of the night
or after a nap, write down all the details that you remember
about your dreams.

Be as specific as you can remember. You can always journal
later, adding more at another time, if you recall more. Write
down everything you remember - who was there, how you felt,
where you were, what you were doing or what was happening,
what you saw or what you didn't see and thought should have
been there. Writing down daily all the details and circumstances
you recall each time, about your dreams, will create a written
pattern of your thoughts and experiences while you slept.

If you can't recall any dreams, write that in your journal.
You can also set the intention the night before that you will
remember what your dreams were. As you are trying to recall
them stay calm, breathe, and relax.

Be sure to record any symbolism that you remember. For
example if you saw yourself in a forest, by the ocean or in the
middle of a busy intersection. To help translate the possible
information stored within your dreams, there are dream
interpretation books and websites that can define the meanings
and symbols attached to what you dreamt.

Just like when you are awake, dreaming has lessons and
experiences to teach. Expressing through the valuable tool
of journaling allows you to further process and understand
your experience and what those lessons are.



How to Relax and Focus Your Mind in Minutes

Attention deficit disorder has almost become an epidemic in our information overloaded society. Unlike the brain, your mind has no boundaries and can be "scattered all over the place". There are many ways to relax and focus your mind. All intense exercise or mental games like chess or billiards will help focus your mind. However, most people don't have the time to jog for 5 miles or shoot a game of pool when they most need to focus.

To be successful it is important to understand that your mind is not your brain. Your brain is the physical apparatus that tunes in and expresses your mind. Your brain can identify a joke, but your mind has a sense of humor. Your brain is similar to a television set it is a receiver of the airwaves that carry information. Your mind is the airwaves (information) of your consciousness.

Your mind is pure consciousness. It is a non tangible energy which includes your thoughts, feelings, imagination, creativity, memories, hopes and dreams. Your brain is a receiver that helps organize, plan and express your minds information. Knowing how to relax and focus the energy of your mind can help you make trustworthy decisions and live a more productive and peaceful life.
Here are simple and easy methods to help relax and focus your mind in minutes. Pick and choose any one of the following techniques to do alone or if you are really scattered then do all five in the sequence I've listed below.

Breathe.

Take a short pause from your daily activity. Begin by inhaling a deep breath through your nose and as you exhale slowly through your mouth. On your exhale, mentally say the word "relax". Repeat 3-4 times. Next focus your awareness on what has captured your attention. What are you thinking / worrying about? Is your mind in the past or the future? Are you thinking about someone in particular? Explore what has captured your attention and then repeat the breathing exercise above to release it with your breath.

Write.

This exercise will help you gain clarity and perspective. Find some notebook paper to write down your thoughts. This will help you slow down your thinking and release what's "on your mind". As you write, remind yourself... "I have these thoughts... I am not my thoughts; I have feelings... I am not my feelings." Let the words flow out of you without editing or being concerned with grammar or spelling.

To clear your consciousness express in writing what's on your mind. Then take these papers and destroy them. This is why I suggest notebook paper versus a journal. Tear them up... throw them away... flush then down the toilet or burn them. You want to destroy the writing with gusto and intensity. Mentally tell yourself, "I am letting go of these thoughts and feelings. I am freeing my mind."

An important fact, you can not write as fast as you think, so when you write down your thoughts you will slow down your thinking automatically. This is one of the benefits of journalling.

Hum.

Take a few moments and hum the lyrics of a favorite song. Concentrate on remembering the lyrics and feeling the vibration of humming in your chest and throat. This will benefit you in two ways: 1. Concentration and remembering will focus your mind. 2. The vibration of humming will ground you into the sensation of your physical body. It is great and you can do this anywhere. After a few minutes you'll feel a difference.

Visualize.

Close your eyes. Take in 3 deep breaths and relax. Imagine a "basketball size" sphere of golden white light hovering above your head. Use your imagination to see it, feel the warmth radiating down on the top of your head. Next imagine this sphere is slowly lowering, touching the crown of your head. Take another deep breath and bring the sphere down inside your head and imagine it is absorbing all the scattered thoughts and dissolving them. Focus on the light and sense it filling your mind with peace and comfort. After a few minutes open your eyes and go back to your activities. Be Sensual.

Focus your attention on your five senses. This provides a mental boundary to contain your scattered mind. Being sensual simply means to be aware of your five senses. Smell the air, feel the temperature on your skin, listen to the sounds around you and to taste the food that you eat. Being sensual brings you into the present moment fast and effectively, and you'll soon become more focused and productive. With the power of your mind can make trustworthy decisions and experience greater mental control and inner peace.
