Let Me Explain Why High Blood Pressure is a Health Concern - You May Be Surprised to Know

In this article I will try and explain why high blood pressure is a health concern. It is called a "silent killer,'' because it doesn't usually cause symptoms while it is causing the damage to your heart and body. There are no clear signs or warning signals.

It is dangerous because it makes the heart work too hard. It also makes the walls of the arteries hard. It is one of several factors associated with cardiovascular disease, which is the number one killer of Americans in both men and women. Cardiovascular disease claims more lives annually than all cancers combined, killing approximately one million people in the U.S.

High blood pressure is far more common in families where other members have this condition. This does not mean that you must have a history of it in your family to have it yourself. You must understand that it is a very serious disease. It can cause damage to your vital organs and in the worst cases can be fatal.

Blood pressure is categorized into four stages. As your blood pressure goes up, the risk of heart attack, stroke, or kidney disease increases. A high pressure is generally considered to be a reading greater than or equal to 140 mm Hg (systolic) or greater than or equal to 90 mm Hg (diastolic). Blood pressure readings in the pre-hypertension category (120-139 systolic or 80-89 diastolic) indicate an increased risk for developing hypertension.

Remember, it is a serious condition that you should not ignore. However it can be lowered either by changing your lifestyle, by natural means, or if necessary by adding medications. High blood pressure or hypertension is also the most important risk factor for stroke-the third leading cause of death in the United States and the leading cause of disability-and a major risk factor for heart attacks, heart failure, and kidney disease. It is also the number one risk factor for congestive heart failure.

I hope I have been able to explain why high blood pressure is a health concern. You should consider the long lasting effects this silent killer can have on you and your family if you decide to ignore it. Most people associate hypertension with taking medications on a daily basis. There are several ways you can lower your blood pressure naturally without the use of routine medications.
