Different Ways to Light Your Home

There are myriad things you can do to decorate your home but have you thought about how you are going to light the results? It is a simple truth that different kinds of lights can completely change the appearance of something, even making colors and shapes appear to be completely different. When you decorate your house, it is very important to consider the lighting, preferably before you actually start decorating. Of course, this requires some advance planning, but the results will be well worth the effort.

There are a huge number of ways in which you can provide artificial lighting. Everything from strip neon to candles can be used to provide light, and every method brings a different feel to a room. A neon light will make things as bright as day in a room, but for those of you who spend all day in an office, often staring at a computer screen, this will probably be overkill. You are more likely to want something softer, easier on the eyes. After all, unless you live in an operating theatre or have extremely bad eyesight, there is only so much light that you need to move around your house, eat, drink and interact with your family.

Standard lamps are a great idea, especially if you only want a reasonably muted glow in a room. They take up very little space and can be placed almost anywhere in a room, as long as the cable can reach to the nearest plug socket. When fitted with uplighter lampshades, the light is cast up onto the ceiling and then reflects down onto the rest of the room. This lighting solution is very easy on the eyes and highly effective at creating a relaxing atmosphere.

A form of lighting that requires rather more in the way of forward planning is recessed lighting. This is where the lights are actually in the wall, which means that not only does the wiring have to be planned well in advance, but the person who is building the wall and plastering it also has to be informed. However, these lights make a great statement and can be placed anywhere from ground level up. For instance, you could really make a statement with recessed light bulbs casting light across each tread of your staircase.

Lighting can be used to highlight the accessories and details in a room in a discreet way which doesn't diminish their impact. For instance, an area rug is a great detail to have in a room but it may be missed with discreet lighting at night. However, a lamp can be placed so that the rug is lit and therefore continues to be an interesting detail at night as well as during the day.

How you light your home can really make a difference to how it feels, so this is an aspect which deserves some careful consideration on your part. With the right planning, the lighting in your home can transform it from a place you sleep and eat to a place where you can truly relax after a long day at work, which is, after all, what you are looking for.
