For years, we were witness to, and some might say victim of, the battle between Blu-ray and HD DVD formats. Luckily for us, we now have a winner. Blu-ray has become the standard for high definition DVD players, recorders and computer media drives. Just as we have barely managed to reach this milestone, experts are now threatening that this victory may be short lived. Blu-ray, they say, may not last nearly as long as we may have all thought, being replaced by direct on-demand downloads and motionless storage media.

Discs in general will likely become obsolete as digital media goes motionless. Kind of ironical, when you think about it. Motion pictures are looking to get out of being stored on motion optical storage media. Television sets will, in the not too far future, be able to play movies and television shows without any additional peripherals, being able to stream those movies and shows directly from on-line video-on-demand services like Netflix.

Blu-ray enthusiasts and die hard supporters believe these experts are overly dramatizing. Thy believe that it will be a few years yet before DVDs disappear off our shelves completely. Two points favor Blu-ray survival, at least in the current market, they say. First, consumers need a way to watch high-definition movies now and second, consumer satisfaction with Blu-ray players is exceptionally high. Much higher than that in the aftermath of the VHS vs Beta battle. Also of note is that Blu-ray players are selling faster than DVD players did during the same period in their evolution. According to the CEA (Consumer Electronics Association), sales of Blu-ray players in the next two to three years will surpass same year comparable sales of standard DVD players. This, despite the fact that Blu-ray players a several times the price of traditional DVD machines.

Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, had this to say. "The window of opportunity for DVD and Blu-ray discs is longer than most people think. But it's not going to last forever."

I do not believe that DVDs - standard or Blu-ray - will disappear off the market and especially off our home shelves any time soon, for at least several more years. We have always been addicted to one form of portable storage media or another. Something to keep on our shelves; something to take over to our friends'; something tangible to own. Streaming will add another convenient consumer... stream. I do not believe it will take anything, if much, away from DVDs, be they Blu-ray or whatever other format those may evolve into.
