How Much TV is Dangerous to Your Health

Exercising regularly will reduce our risk of cancer, heart disease, hypertension, and premature death. So, why don't we do it? If your doctor wrote you a prescription for medicine to make you healthier, would you not fill the prescription and take it as directed until you got better?

Taking a pill or even exercising regularly may not be enough to reduce the risk of disease. What studies are showing is that our addiction a sedentary lifestyle - like watching television or surfing the Internet - are real contributors to weight gain, type 2 diabetes, cancer, abnormal sugar metabolism, metabolic syndrome and other deadly cardiovascular diseases.

Check this out: a recent study out of Australia followed the television viewing habits of almost 9,000 people, aged 25 or older, for 7 years, and found that for every hour spent per day in front of the television, there was an:

Interestingly, these numbers applied to people who were both of a healthy weight and those who were considered overweight or obese. And, the statistics worsened for those who watched more than four hours of television a day (compared to two), where there was a 46% higher risk of death from all causes and an 80% increased risk of death due to cardiovascular disease.

Of course, exercising will have a positive impact on your health. But, studies like this show that sitting around too much can have a negative impact on your health - even when exercising regularly. Although the link between cancer mortality and television viewing was modest in this study, the amount of television watched compared to elevated rates of death from cardiovascular disease, as well as death from all causes, was impressive (and not in a good way).

So, as you get further into the New Year, set up your health and fitness resolutions as an actual prescription. Write yourself a health prescription of the things you want to change and how you intend on making them. Then, follow it through as though as if your life depended on it - because it does! And remember: Exercise more - watch TV less.
