Its midnight, and you know you should really get to sleep. After all, you have to wake up in eight hours. But then your favorite show comes on, and you're kind of hungry anyway. The show is over, and you're finally winding down, but then your friend calls you, and you end up talking for another hour. If this sounds familiar, you could be hurting your health by staying up too late. Your body's functions are based on a circadian clock, and messing with that clock has consequences.
The circadian clock is also sometimes known as the biological clock. As far as sleep goes, its functions are based off of when sunlight is or isn't hitting your eyes. If you go outside in the morning when you wake up, you should feel a boost of energy. This is because the sunlight signals your body to shut off the production of melatonin, the natural hormone that makes you feel sleepy. On the flip side, this means you should stay in dimly lit places for awhile before you want to go to sleep. This signals the production of melatonin, so it will be easier for you to drift off to sleep.
One interesting thing is that no matter how much sleep you get, going to bed too long after sundown can have an effect on your weight. We are hardwired for survival, so the tendency is to eat more in the summer to save up for winter. The body can tell it is summer because the days are longer so we are awake longer. Now, when humans stay up long after the sun has gone down, the body is fooled into thinking it is a long summer day and it needs to store up as much fat as possible. This often leads to late night snacking, particularly on carbohydrates.
For some people, their reasons for going to bed late are less internal and more just because they aren't tired. To combat this problem, exercise is the perfect solution. Vigorous working out earlier in the day will result in fatigue at night, making it much easier to fall into a deep sleep. If this doesn't work it may be your mind keeping you up. If this is the case, try keeping a notebook next to your bed. Writing down thoughts that come into your mind will help you clear them out and get to sleep.
