Intelligent Television - Highbrow Entertainment For Adults on Satellite TV

While parents have spent a lot of time fretting about whether or not television programming is educational for their children, they've somehow neglected to worry about themselves! And while it can be argued that anyone who works a long, hard day has the right to relax however he desires, it still is proven that leading by example is so much more effective than just lecturing children. Therefore, for parents who are truly engaged in their children's development, one of the most proactive approaches around the house can be to make an extra effort for parents to find more educational programming for themselves on satellite tv while their children are around.

It's important, of course, to remember that the word educational does not have to immediately evoke boring science programs of old, with narrators droning on and on. There is quite a bit of programming that both children and adults would be fascinated by, while at the same time learning from. And who knows? If your child catches you watching something like "Time Warp," where extremely high-tech cameras catch split-second movements and explain the science behind them, then maybe you can encourage them to veer more towards something intelligent the next time they get to choose between cartoons or nature shows.

"Time Warp" and a lot of other Discovery Channel programs are a great choice for any parent looking for intelligent programming on satellite TV that will be interesting to them and their children alike. With cameras devised by M.I.T. scientists and a rigging crew that knows how to choose spectacular feats to tape, adults will definitely be drawn into the program. See a tablesaw designed to stop a split-second before taking off someone's hand--in slow-motion. Kids will be amazed with the slow-motion footage of dogs drinking water and skateboarders learning to land complicated tricks, all the while learning things about physics without even realizing it.

But educational programming on satellite tv is not just limited to those shows that talk about science. It is now possible to travel the world without even leaving the couch, thanks to a serious rush of programs designed to examine travel from every possible angle. Whether it's a peek at a faraway culture and its many differences or someone exploring the different roadside diners of America, travel programming has taken off, and there are many shows that are equally entertaining and hilarious but also manage to be informative.

One of the best for kids of all ages is "No Reservations," where bad-boy chef Anthony Bourdain travels all over the world, trying the local dishes without prejudice. Whether it's every part of the pig cooked up in a stew down in Argentina or putrefied shark meat in Iceland, the dishes that are the most difficult to swallow aren't the purpose of the program. Bourdain and his crew are more interested in giving insight into the local people, whether it's farmers who have been preparing particular dishes a certain way for generations, or the warm hospitality and beautiful scenery of the island of Sardinia. More like a documentary film than just a satellite TV show, Bourdain manages to offer real insight into other cultures, while still offering up enough things that will make everyone laugh.

So the next time you're searching for something more highbrow on television, don't assume that it has to bore you to tears. Instead, try to check out some of the newer educational programming, and be surprised at how much fun you can have while learning.
