Eyelid surgery can make you look and feel great-but that's after the recovery period. Don't expect to undergo any cosmetic surgery and leave the surgery looking like a brand new person. You'll most likely end up resembling something slightly monstrous and bloated immediately following your procedure. However, if you can tough it out for the first few days (which are always the worse) and then grin and bear it for just another week or two, you'll emerge a refreshed, bright-eyed new person, ready to show off your brand new look to the world.
So how can you make your recovery go as smoothly as possible? You can't really avoid the bruising, swelling, and tenderness, but there are many ways you can make this period more comfortable.
Follow Orders: Your surgeon will likely give you some verbal instructions pre-surgery concerning your aftercare, and many will supply you with a written instruction sheet on how to care for your eyes and potential risks and complications that can develop (always ask for instructions in writing if not offered). In fact, it's a good idea to get a copy of the instructions to give to a trusted friend or family member just in case you are slightly incapacitated for the first few days following the operation.
It's important to follow all of your surgeon's order specifically. Call the office if you have any questions or find something confusing. If they suggest specific products or methods of taking care of your eyes, don't do the contrary. Call and ask before you attempt an alternative method.
Get Help: Most eyelid operation patients are fine on their own by the third or fourth day, but the first few can be emotionally and physically difficult. You will definitely need someone to drive you home from the eyelid operation, but you will probably also feel more comfortable with someone to assist you at least for a couple of hours every day. Your vision will be blurred from eye drops and you will feel extremely tired and sore. You won't have much energy to do much for yourself, like getting fresh ice packs or preparing a meal. Having someone there can ease the stress and help your recovery go much smoother.
Entertainment: After eyelid surgery, your eyes will be a bit useless for a while. Reading will prove difficult and even watching TV can tire you out quickly. If you allow yourself to get too bored during recovery, however, you may end up focusing too much on your discomfort and make yourself miserable. Find some new music or books on tapes to keep you distracted. Call up some old friends and have a long chat. These things can take your mind off any discomfort you might feel.
You recovery from the eyelid operation doesn't have to be a nightmare. The more prepared you are ahead of time, and the more you allow yourself to get comfortable, the faster the time will go by. Consult with a board-certified cosmetic surgeon for more information regarding this procedure.
