So, you'd like to become more intelligent, smarter, and to really use this brain power to advance yourself, and your family? Well, then you need to remember something about that little human mind of yours; "use it or lose it!" Yes, the brain works much like a muscle, if you workout each day it grows stronger and stronger. Your mind works in a similar fashion, if you watch TV all day it melts to mush, and if you use it all the time it gets stronger, better at thinking.
You know they say that the stimulus you get from TV takes your brain up for the first 30-minutes and they drops off slowly into nothing'ness land. So, when watching TV it makes sense to only do it 30-minutes at a time, and no more. Indeed, one might even surmise that video games are similar in nature, perhaps a bit longer due to your involvement.
Why not try some brain exercises instead, and give your mind a workout each day, much like someone might do who goes to the gym. Here are some other brain exercises I have invented and have done off and on for years;
Visualize mathematical 3D patterns in your mind, actually inside your brain, start with simple objects like circles, spheres, boxes, triangles, parallelograms, and then move into very complex objects like those in Stephen Wolfram's "New Type of Science" as you get better. Once you get good at this, start spinning them inside your head, and expand them outside your head three feet, 100-yards, mile, 100 miles, size of the Earth, Size of the Sun, size of the solar system, size of the Milky Way, size of the universe. And spin it.
You see, evolutionarily speaking humans would have hunted, gathered, defended, planned, etc. So, the mind has developed to do many things, switching completely to a new task. The power of the human mind is significant, it is a great organic device, excellently built. One problem I see is that folks allow brain washing of authority, education, and even the science of the day to tell them what to believe, how to think, and accept the explanations or the limits of the brain.
Who says there has to be limits? I cannot accept this from human scientists, should you? Of course not, and each person can push their limits and choose for themselves. If they accept the stated-science, discharge imagination, fall for religious answers, or believe they cannot achieve, then I suppose they are correct, and that is therefore their self-imposed or accepted limits trapped within their own authority enslavement cave.
Oh, yes, indeed, I too like Google for the same reasons as you do, to learn new stuff, yet I am concerned that folks have chosen to use it as a crutch rather than a booster rocket. What are your thoughts on these things? Sorry, I made you think, but you have to start somewhere. Email me your thoughts on this topic.
