Here's an interesting health statistic: around 6 to 8 percent of adults have finger nail fungus. Depending on whether or not you're part of that statistic, you should find the thought of fungus growing on your nails more than just a little gross. It is gross, embarrassing and sometimes smelly. First off, what is finger nail fungus? Its scientific name is Onychomycosis and it happens when fungus gets under and into your nails. It affects both the fingernails and the toenails, and like all fungi, it likes dark and damp places. Symptoms for toe and finger nail fungi include the nails thickening, getting a yellow tinge, and crumbling and chipping. Fortunately, there are home remedies for nail fungi that can take care of the lighter infections and stop them from getting any worse.
For light finger nail fungus cases, the first thing you can try is a foot bath. Foot bath home remedies for nail fungus vary; though the ingredients used are easily procurable household products. The easiest one you can try is to soak your toenails or fingernails in an equal-parts vinegar and warm water solution for 20 minutes twice daily. Another popular foot bath for nail fungus treatment is Listerine; apparently, the antiseptic in the mouthwash doesn't only stop bad breath, it can also help get rid of fungus in your nails. Hydrogen peroxide at 3% can also be used as a foot bath, though you may want to add a bit of water to the solution to take a little bit of the edge off since hydrogen peroxide can be irritating. Aside from that, you can also try out using rubbing alcohol. After soaking your feet or fingernails, be sure to dry them completely.
Aside from the foot baths, topical home remedies are also used as nail fungus cures. One of these topical remedies is Vick's Vaporub. While this might not be as effective for quashing the fungal infection, some say that it does stop the infection from going any further. Reportedly, tea tree oil and vitamin E oil are effective as a topical form of treatment. For topical home remedies for this illness, you'll need to apply them on the affected nails two or three times a day.
Another option to nurse your nails back to health is oral medication. There are a lot of over-the-counter nail infection cures available and it's just a matter of finding the right one for you. If you've been suffering from finger nail fungus or you've been seeing symptoms, you should go see your doctor for tips and advice on how to get rid of it
